In this augmented biophony, we can tell the groove of the tymbals in a Cicada barbara! Cicadas can make their stridulatory organs vibrate more than 100 times per second. In order to appreciate the structure of their rhythms, we took a field recording of an isolated individual, then we reduced speed (0,03x) and we very slightly shaped the sound through equalization, to turn a 3-second-performance into 1’30’’ minutes of this progressive mantra.
We now hear the individual sound of each of his two tymbals, and feel the rhythm accelerating, growing in volume and creating several patterns until reaching a full groove.
The last 20 seconds of the piece include a fragment of the original soundscape recording, happening in a coastal semiurban area.
Together with poet Laia Malo, and as part of the duo Jansky, we’re working on the project Insectisynths. With raw materials like this, we’re building a creative sound library of Balearic Insect Electro Sounds (beats, loops, ambients, etc.).
